Little School on the bog

Checking in with Older Homeschoolers

As we begin to wrap up some of our studies for the summer break I can’t help but think ahead to September.

I will be home educating two teenagers, a ‘tweenager’, 7 year old and doing a little more formal preschooling with Daphne! Its going to be a busy one.

While its pretty obvious to me what work in our homeschool is done with joy & what brings meltdowns and cries of “I cant do this”, I wanted to have a more solid record of what my children were enjoying and what they weren’t. At our recent assessment with Tusla (the regulatory body for homeschooling here in Ireland) I felt it helped to demonstrate our progress and my planning process.

Giving this one pager out at the end of the school year means that when I begin to plan next year I can take everyones needs and wishes into account.

Every time we do this exercise something comes up that I was not expecting – from topics of interest to seeing confidence grow in the independent studies section. It goes to show that we as educating parents can’t sit on our laurels & our little homeschool’s are always evolving.

The other really helpful area is the “less of this” box as sometimes it has led to uncomfortable but necessary conversations about how we learn and who we learn with. Writing things down instead of having to work out how to articulate you aren’t feeling great about something is really good for those children approaching or in the awkward teen years.

If you’d like to download a copy of the check in sheet you can do so, for free, as many times as you’d like by clicking the link below.

Please let me know when you use it and how helpful you found it over on my instagram @littleschoolonthebog, I’d love to see this being used out in the wild.
